About Fernando Gutierrez

Fernando lives in the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago with his husband Matt. He is an educator of diverse learners for CPS during the day and artist part time.

Fernando developed a passion for urban art from growing up in Guadalajara's inner city, and working as an educator in the south sides of Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Chicago. Through his celebration of public landscapes, Fernando seeks to inspire admiration for cities that provide collective and individual pride of our neighborhoods.

Fernando sees the diversity of American cities as his source of inspiration. A major theme in his work is equality. In part because of his family's immigration journey; also, Fernando and Matt became part of civil rights history in Milwaukee when they became the first same-sex marriage of Wisconsin in June, 2014.

He feels that the love, acceptance, and rejection they experienced as well as his family’s history increased his awareness of the struggles to achieve equality for all.

Fernando explores the character of homes, buildings, and parks.  His artwork comes together from interactions between urban life, and architectural, industrial and natural backdrops. The emphasis is on texture and light that mirror dynamic environments in our beloved cities. The places that a growing number of Americans call home.
